Writing Letters to Elected Officials to Promote Tobacco Free Kids in Nebraska

Letters for tobacco free kids in Nebraska
You can make a difference in laws that affect tobacco use and the health of Nebraskans. Letters from constituents are important to influencing the laws that govern us, including laws that impact tobacco use in Nebraska.

A personal letter is a great way to communicate with your elected officials. In fact, many legislators consider the letters that they receive to represent letters from others, as well, who haven't written them.

State Who You Are and What You Want

In the first paragraph, tell your legislators that you are a constituent and identify the issue you're addressing. If your letter is about a specific piece of legislation, it helps to identify it by a bill or ordinance number.

Hit No More than Three Key Points
Choose up to three key points supporting your position, and explain them.

                                                                Make it Personal
Tell your elected official why this legislation matters in your community or state. Include a personal story that shows how this issue affects you and your family if you have one. These stories can carry a great deal of weight with an elected official.

If you have a personal story or professional expertise in the issue, be sure to include that in your letter.
