Who knows better the harms of smoking than a cardiologist?

Nebraska Heart Institute Cardiologist Dr. Douglas Netz has seen the harm that smoking does and encourages people to quit smoking.

"Coronary artery disease which is the number one killer in the United States and stroke which is the number 3 killer are directly related to smoking in a lot of patients," Dr. Netz told 10/11 news.

Dr. Netz said 70 percent of people who smoke want to quit and 30% do not want to quit.

Janet Calhoon is like many Nebraskans: She wants to quit smoking.

Thanks to an American Lung Association program being offered by Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, she's getting help in quitting smoking, according to the Norfolk Daily News.

Calhoon, a graphic designer at the Daily News, was 18 years old when she smoked her first cigarette to “be cool” and to fit in with everyone else, even though she “hated it” when her mother lit up.

The Daily News tells her story of trying to quit smoking for good. Many smokers can relate to her story of trying to quit smoking more than once.

Nebraskans throughout the state also may participate in the state's quitline to help them quit smoking or quit other tobacco use.
